19 January 2023 We’re republishing this for a second time to draw attention to our fourth podcast, in which Jancis presses Christian Seely, head of AXA Millésimes, on the peculiarities of the Bordeaux wine trade and what constitutes a classic wine. Look out for our reviews of bordeaux 2019s, retasted blind, later this month.

21 October 2021 For this week's Throwback Thursday we thought it would be interesting to republish this audit of the best performers in the Southwold tastings – not least because two of them did so well in this week's 10-years-on tastings. See right-bank 2011s and left-bank 2011s. Sweet whites tomorrow.

26 March 2018 Bordeaux fans may be aware that every year a group of about 20 of us – trade and media – taste all of the top 200 or so wines of each vintage when they are about three and half years old, so well settled in to bottle.

For historic reasons we call these the Southwold tastings and this year, when we assessed the 2014 vintage, I suggested it would be interesting to compare the performance of individual châteaux over time. (I was spurred on by the feeling that Smith Haut Lafitte, Léoville Poyferré, Pichon Baron and Suduiraut always seemed to do particularly well.)

The team at Farr Vintners who organise this tasting have obligingly come up with this list of average scores out of 20 over the last 10 vintages – 2005 to 2014 inclusive – for various groups of wines. I for one find the results fascinating. Bear in mind that we taste completely blind and the wines are tasted in peer groups.

Didn’t Champs Libres, the dry white made by the Guinaudeaus of Ch Lafleur on their home farm near Fronsac, do well? And Christian Seely (pictured above), in charge of AXA Millésimes (including Pichon Baron and Suduiraut), should perhaps be in line for a bonus. As for Daniel and Florence Cathiard of Smith Haut Lafitte (pictured below), they should give themselves a very hearty pat on the back. I for one salute their commitment to sustainability, too.
