Klein Karoo

To the east stretches the increasingly hot and arid Klein Karoo, where vines, many of them for bulk produce, tend to be planted close to rivers for irrigation water. The Calitzdorp district has a strong suit in fortified wines, particularly those made in the image of port. There are even hotter, drier conditions in the Orange River, many miles north and inland from the main Cape wine regions.
