Ukraine, and in particular the Crimean peninsula, has clearly excellent potential – as witness the Massandra central winery bottlings of rich dessert wines sold by Sotheby's in the late 1980s – but it has so far failed to attract much outside investment. Sparkling wine is a speciality and the most planted varieties include Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
