Smell is the most evocative of senses. A sudden waft of aftershave or blossom or baking can transport us to a different place and time in a breathtaking instant. Wine is all about scent, of course – yet when you taste it frequently and in different contexts, its teleportational power becomes diminished. For me, a far more powerful aroma is found in wineries during harvest. The moment I breathe in that cocktail of fruit, carbon dioxide, yeast, oak, blood, sweat and tears I am magicked back...
