The grape varieties may be easy to understand (Chardonnay whites and Pinot Noir reds) but the appellation controlee classification of the vineyards is anything but straightforward. Burgundy is all about terroir and small producers. Think of it as a pyramid wih the large regional AOCs at the base accounting for over two thirds of the wines and the village AOCs inc 1er Cru and the Grand Cru AOCs at the top producing much smaller amounts of wine. This is a real treat and a must for lovers of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines, a great chance to taste fine wines from the spiritual home of these two classic grape varieties.
