An introduction to Spanish wines

Tuesday 13 September 2022

,

At The White Horse, Hinton St Mary, we take our wine seriously, whilst not taking ourselves too seriously. Whether you’re coming to enjoy our house wine by the glass, a bottle of celebratory champagne, or accompanying dinner with a special bottle of claret, we have something to suit, and pride ourselves on providing outstanding value for money. We want to share our love of wine with everyone! So we’ve organised an informal wine circle, a place where people can come, enjoy a few tastings of interesting & noteworthy wines, and understand more about the world of wine. These events will be very sociable, inclusive and are open to all, regardless of your wine experience to date. Each event is intended to be standalone, so you can dip in and dip out as your schedule allows. The wines will be accompanied by nibbles. Leading the sessions will be our house Master of Wine, Martin Hudson. There are around 400 Masters of Wine in the world, so it’s said you’re more likely to meet someone who’s been into space, than a master of wine! We’re very lucky to have him! Session 3 : An Introduction to Spanish Wines: Spain offers some of the best value wines to be had in Europe when measuring quality and character against price. It is one of the top five wine producing countries of the world, and has a history of wine-making going back to Roman times. However, it is true to say that a time-travelling Roman legionnaire visiting a provincial winery in Spain in the 1950s would be forgiven for thinking that no progress had been made in wine technology in the intervening two millenia. Spain, probably more than any other European country, has undergone a revolution in vinification over the last 50 years, arguably more so in its white wines than its reds, which have had an excellent reputation for over a century. Discover current trends and traditional styles in Spanish wine in this tutored tasting. We'll focus on both white and red dry table wines, with a glass of that much maligned and misunderstood traditional fizz Cava to start. Ticket price includes 8 wine samples from a variety of regions & styles, accompanied by hot & cold snacks
