Online: Grand Cru Burgundy with West London Wine School
Thursday 28 January 2021
,
Join wine school founder, Jimmy Smith, as he hosts a spectacular online tasting exploring the very best of the famed lands of Burgundy. Jimmy will explore five world-class Grand Crus and one Premier Cru (that really should be a Grand Cru) from climates such as Corton, Echezeaux, Charmes-Chambertin and Chablis.
Grand Cru is the highest level in the vineyard classification of Burgundy. There are a total of 550 hectares of Grand Cru vineyards, of which 356 hectares produce red wine and 194 hectares white, or 2% of Burgundy's total 28,000 hectares of vineyards.
The origin of Burgundy's Grand Crus can be found in the work of the Cistercians who, among their vast land holdings, were able to delineate and isolate plots of land that produced wine of distinct character and exceptional quality. Today Burgundy’s Grand Crus are amongst the most sought after and expensive wines in the world thanks to their exceptionally high quality and scarcity.
