ONLINE TASTING: Jimmy's Best of Alto-Adige with West London Wine School

Thursday 24 February 2022

,

Join wine school founder Jimmy Smith as he leads you through the classic region of Alto-Adige discovering nine fantastic wines. Jimmy was invited out on his first press trip post covid in September 2021 to the exciting Italian region of the Alto-Adige. Alto Adige is one of Italy’s smallest winegrowing regions with only just over 13,000 acres but the region varies enough to boast seven distinct growing sub-regions and thanks to this geographical position, it is also one of the most multifaceted and diverse. What emerges here are not trendy wines, but rather authentic wines with their own original character. Jimmy was overwhelmingly impressed with the quality of wines across the board and will be showcasing nine (yes NINE) of his top drops featuring mouthwatering whites such as Pinot Bianco (Weissburgunder), the rare and complex Manzoni Bianco, the aromatics of Sylvaner and Kerner and the complex Riesling. In addition there are three superb reds featuring Schiava, Lagrein and Pinot Noir – all exceptional. And for good measure, of course Jimmy is throwing in a beautiful orange wine that is a beautiful spin on Gewurztraminer. Alto-Adige Vineyards in Alto Adige creep up the sides of steep glacial valleys in horizontal rows with the dramatic backdrop of the breath-taking Dolomite Mountains. The winery estates here are commonly called “Schloss” which is the German word for castle/chateau and as the land is so fragmented across steep valley slopes there are many excellent co-operatives (or Cantina in Italian) that produce stunning wines that are also keenly priced. The gorgeous city of Bolzano is smack-bang in the centre of Alto Adige and has some of the most amazing scenery. Join in on a wonderful tasting, with stories of Jimmy’s trip, pictures of breath-taking scenery and all fuelled by nine wonderful wines.
