Quinta da Boavista, Dão
Quinta da Boavista is one of the most iconic vineyards of the Douro - an estate associated with the name of Baron Joseph James Forrester, a pre-eminent figure in the history of winemaking in this, Portugal’s premium winemaking region.
Quinta da Boavista was included in the first ever demarcation of the Douro demarcated region, ordered by Portugal’s first minister the Marquis of Pombal, in 1757. Half of the 80 hectares of this estate is under vine and all its vineyards have the top “A”.
Located on the Douro’s right bank, the vineyards arch out around a natural amphitheatre along a stunning network of geometric schist terraces built by hand in the 19th Century. Some of these terraces, piled steeply on top of one another like ancient Incan gardens, tower over eight metres high and are one of the region’s ex-libris. Add the Douro’s extreme climatic conditions and it is almost a given that Boavista’s terroir is unique. About nine hectares of the vineyard are planted with old vines – some almost 100 years old. In addition to the main five Douro grapes, other less usual varieties are planted at Boavista, such as Donzelinho and Sousão.
Quinta da Serradinha, Leiria, Lisboa
Quinta da Serradinha, is a 5th generation family winery located in the town of Leiria, on the limestone’s slopes of Serra d´Aire, north of Lisboa Region, within 17 km from the Atlantic sea. Benefiting from the ocean, they produces wines with refreshing minerality, elegance and ageing potential. All 6.5 hectares of vineyards are located on calcareous clay soil and have been Certified Organic since 1994. Quinta da Serradinha were the pioneers starting as organic farming in the area. In the middle of the 20th century, the Marques da Cruz family began to commercialize wine the region of Lisboa. Today, the winery is still one of the leaders in Portugal when it comes to producing wine as naturally as possible in both the vineyard and the winery. Their vines were planted between 1952 and 1996. The total production is 17.000 bottles/year.
