Webinar: Australia’s old vines

Monday 12 October 2020

,

Explore Australia’s rich winemaking history, ancient vines and classic wine styles.

  • Australia’s rich winemaking and viticultural history dates back to the early 19th century, and the country boasts some of the oldest vines in the world, grown in some of the oldest geology and most complex terroirs in the world. In fact, some of Australia’s treasured vines are more than 150 years old.
  • The survival and stamina of these rare old vines are thanks in large part to the special sites on which they grow, many of them historic in their own right. They’re also a testament to the generations of dedicated winemaking families who have long cultivated and cared for them. Some of these families have been growing grapes and making wine for five generations or more.
  • These unique vines and the grapes they produce have played – and continue to play – a pivotal role in Australia’s grape and wine community. They’re behind some of the country’s most extraordinary wines and have helped shape some of Australia’s classic wine styles.
  • Explore Australia’s rich winemaking history and the country’s old vines with Thomas Curtius MW, and hear insights from James March in the Barossa and Michael Wehrs in McLaren Vale. Find out how Australia has preserved their old vineyards and what makes these old vines so unique. Learn more about classic wine styles and regional expressions, and discover how old vines make great wines. James and Michael will be beaming in live from their respective regions in Australia, whilst Thomas – based in Germany – leads the conversation and fields questions.
  •  The webinar will be presented in German and a recording will be available to watch on this page afterwards.
