Austro-Hungarians – Grüner and Furmint compared
Several months ago I took part in a blind tasting of examples of Grüner Veltliner and dry Furmint, the two key white wine grapes of Austria and Hungary respectively, hand picked by my fellow taster for The World of Fine Wine magazine, Stephan Reinhardt. I wasn’t 100% certain of the logic for the pairing but, as I’m already a convert to dry Furmint, I was intrigued to see how it compares to GV. Stephan pointed out that Roland Velich has planted a vineyard with GV surrounded by Furmint on a particular site in Austrian Burgenland.
