Wine and tourism course in Perpignan

Thursday 3 May 2007 • 2 min read
Just as the Wine & Spirit Education Trust in London announce with pride that their London headquarters is to host the current students of the Bordeaux Wine MBA programme May 28-Jun 8 for one of their five residential study sessions comes news of a new graduate certificate in tourism and wine at Perpignan university in Roussillon. This residential course runs July 16-27 and is designed to teach students “how to talk about wine” as well as encouraging them to “discover southern France’s atmosphere and landscapes”.

“This graduate certificate provides advanced knowledge in all aspects of modern winemaking through the example of the Languedoc Roussillon vineyards and famous places:

-          exploration of the famous French wine growing regions
-          winemaking
-          tasting methods
-          language of wine

Joining theory and practice during the summer season the participants will be exposed to

-          discovery of famous landscapes and places of our region
-          the work of professional winemakers including visits to wine cellars
-          wine and food matching
-          practical experience of theoretical foundations focused on the special character of the wines of Southern France”

The 60-hour course, organized by SAIC–Séjours Inter Campus and priced at 800 euros, is designed for anyone of any nationality over 18 who loves wine and can speak either French or English to a competent level and comprises the following:

-          foundations of wine science, specialized vocabulary, how to talk about wine.
-          exploration of the wine growing regions
-          visits of local wine cellars
-          key characteristics of the different grape varieties and their regions
-          winemaking and wine growing
-          tasting workshops to practice methods and techniques
-          cultural visits organized by professional guides
-          food and wine pairing
-          tasting workshops and visits of wine cellars
-
The course, including all tuition, transport, visits and study materials, costs 800 euros. On Sunday and evenings there are optional activities.

You can stay in the University of Perpignan’s student accommodation for 160 euros for a simple single room with breakfast. A studio with bathroom and kitchen costs 300 euros or they can arrange accommodation in a local hotel or half board can be arranged with selected host families.

The course is arranged in conjunction with :
    * Institut Universitaire de Technologie
    * CIVR, Conseil Interprofessionnel des Vins du Roussillon
    * Station Vitivinicole de Tresserre
    * INAO in Roussillon
    * Les œnologues du Roussillon
    * Des domaines viticoles du Languedoc-Roussillon.
    * Ferme Auberge Domaine Viticole de Rombeau, Rivesaltes.

At 60 hours spread over two weeks, this constitutes less than the famous 35-hour week but is obviously reasonbly intense. I'd ask whether they will be spending time in the upper Agly valley as this is where it all seems to be happening in Roussillon at the moment.
