One of the main reasons I was invited to Ningxia was to be one of the judges of the first Ningxia Wine Awards, an ambitious exercise designed to show off to outsiders the potential of the wines and to attempt some measure of objective assessment for local winemakers. Other judges included my fellow Master of Wine Dr Liz Thach of Sonoma, Michaelis Boutaris of Greece, who has a wine operation in Gansu province west of Ningxia, Frenchman Gérard Colin, who has been making wine in China for years...
