Are the discounters ever of interest to serious wine lovers? Andy Howard MW picks out the pearls. 

The prospects for further growth at discounters Aldi and Lidl look good, made even better with the announcement on 25 April that the proposed merger between Sainsbury and Asda has been vetoed by the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority. Interestingly, one of the key arguments put forward by Sainsbury CEO Mike Coupe was that the merger would give consumers the benefit of cheaper groceries – something that Aldi and Lidl have based their success on over many years.
