The Roero zone, crowned with the highest quality designation, DOCG, as recently as 2004, may be better known for its white wine made from Arneis than for its red. It is situated on the left bank of the Tanaro river north east of Alba, its sandy soils producing a rounder, earlier accessible style of red wine than those from the calcareous clay of Barolo and Barbaresco.
