A plethora of Portuguese reds

Following on from our Plethora of Portuguese whites, here is the second in the trio of articles, this one focusing on red wines. Sweet and/or fortified wines completes the set. This photo, taken by Vasco Croft, owner of Aphros, shows a perfect example of one of my favourite dark-skinned Portuguese varieties, known as Vinhão in the Vinho Verde region and as Sousão in the Douro. While it can yield rustic, mouth-challenging reds, when handled well it makes some of the most wonderfully distinctive red (or perhaps I should say black) wines in the country.
