Haynes Hanson & Clark was founded in 1978 by Anthony Hanson MW, Denis Haynes and Nick Clark. Hanson, as he explained in Re-thinking en primeur recently, had been buying bordeaux en primeur since the 1969 vintage.

David Burns MW had hired Hanson as wine buyer for Courtenay Wines (International), a subsidiary of Cadbury Schweppes, which then also owned André Simon shops. The Haynes was Denis Haynes, who had been Hanson's boss at Courtenay.
