The story of Taurasi, Campania's sturdy, long-lived red based on the Aglianico grape variety and often referred to as 'the Barolo of the South', cannot be told without mentioning the Mastroberardino family. It is not far-fetched to say that without Mastroberardino the wine would probably have remained a local speciality, because when in the 1960s whole swathes of Italy's vineyards were given over to high-yielding, insipid varieties to help reignite the Italian economy, the Mastroberardinos stubbornly clung to the indigenous Aglianico. And they have continued doing so since the estate's foundation in the 18th century.
