Calabria, Private Bin Montepulciano 2021 Riverina

17

Tasted from a 3-cl mini sample bottle. Presented by winemaker Emma Norbiato, who said that Montepulciano ripens late so the grapes hold their acid – very suited to the hot climate of Riverina. ‘It throws a massive crop – green bunches everywhere, and bunch on bunch; so we go through and drop bunches. We do a lot of intervention in the vineyard. You can’t just machine prune and walk away and hope for the best.’ They only have one 2.5-ha (5-acre) block of Montepulciano. 15-year-old vines on loamy sand over limestone, 115 m, 40% of the blend finished fermentation in old oak and matured for six months.
It smells wonderful! Black cherries, raspberry jam and damson juice. Fabulous acidity that runs a fine arced line through the entire length of the wine. Exceptionally elegant fruit on the perfect cusp of ripeness. Finely spiced, finely sliced, gentle press of tannins. Mouth-watering finish. Surely it cannot be only £11? VVGV (TC)
