Paşaeli, Blanc de Noirs Çalkarası 2021 Aegean

16.5

Full bottle 1,288 g. This is Turkey’s first blanc de noirs made from the Çalkarası variety and their third vintage. The vineyard is at 950 m. Grapes were harvested 3 September, pressed with whole clusters. The juice was removed from the skins in less then 25 minutes to retain a pale colour. Then it was fermented at 18 °C for 20 days in a stainless-steel tank. It was aged on its lees for 3 months with lees-stirring twice a week.
Very, very pale pink – more white with a pink cast. Delicate, woody-cedary-smoky nose (not oaky) and a gentle creaminess from the lees as well as an impression of chalk. On the palate, so much fruit flavour, really unexpected fruit intensity. Orange plum, tart red fruit, utterly fresh and so full of fruit. You could drink this with or without food as the tannins are subtle. Gently chewy, an impact wine, with a long finish. (JH)
