Paşaeli, K2 Cabernet Sauvignon/Cabernet Franc/Merlot/Petit Verdot 2019 Aegean

16.5

Full bottle 1,333 g. 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot. All four varieties are grown in a single vineyard of 4 hectares in Kaynaklar near the city of Izmir. K2 is the second wine made with the fruit of Kaynaklar. All the varieties are fermented separately at 25 °C for 3 weeks with pumping over. And they are barrel-aged for 12 months, in one- to two-year-old French oak barrels. Further bottle-ageing for a minimum of 6 months.
Deep crimson with opaque core. Interesting contrast between sweetness of ripe fruit and a hint of leafiness. Complex mix of fruit aromas and flavours, both black and red, earthy too. Dry, youthfully chewy, almost chalky tannins but the texture has been smoothed by the oak – so it is rounded but still chalky and giving the effect of dark chocolate on the finish. And absolutely not ready to drink unless you have some serious protein to hand to interact with those tannins. Well-balanced freshness and ripeness. The alcohol is felt a little on the finish so don't let it get too warm in your glass. (JH)
