Australia falls for Pinot

There was a bit of a brouhaha here last week when a Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir – the Yabby Lake 2012 Block 1 made by Tom Carson pictured here – snaffled the Jimmy Watson Trophy at the Royal Melbourne Wine Awards.

Wine news went mainstream for a change: chairman of judges, Oakridge winemaker David Bicknell was interviewed on Radio National (our version of Radio 4); the 'historic win' even made the pages of the Herald Sun (our version of the News of the World – except that the Hun's still alive and kicking).

So, what's all the fuss about?
