Portrait of Gerard Basset by Mirentxu Bellet

Jancis is hosting a very special burgundy tasting in New York next month in aid of the Gérard Basset Foundation. Snag a ticket now.

On the evening of Monday 6 May I’ll be presenting a range of sumptuous burgundies at Bonhams in New York at a sit-down tasting in aid of the Gérard Basset Foundation, founded in memory of the late and much-missed super-sommelier Gérard Basset OBE, MS, MW, MBA, OIV MSc, pictured above by Mirentxu Bellet.

A strictly limited number of tasters will enjoy the following mouth-watering line-up.

  • Domaine Droin, Hommage à Louis 2020 Grand Cru Chablis
  • Domaine Hubert Lamy, Clos de la Chatenière Blanc Premier Cru 2014 St-Aubin
  • Domaine Anne Gros, Le Grand Maupertui Grand Cru 2020 Clos de Vougeot
  • Domaine de l'Arlot, Clos des Fôrets St-Georges Monopole Premier Cru 2019 Nuits-St-Georges
  • Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair, Les St-Georges Premier Cru 2019 Nuits-St-Georges
  • Domaine Henri Gouges, Les Vaucrains Premier Cru 2018 Nuits-St-Georges
  • Domaine Bruno Clair, Clos St-Jacques Premier Cru 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin
  • Domaine des Lambrays, Grand Cru 2016 Clos des Lambrays
  • Domaine Marquis d'Angerville, Les Caillerets Premier Cru 2016 Volnay
  • Hospices de Beaune, Cuvée Dames Hospitalières Premier Cru 2015 Beaune
  • Domaine Faiveley, Grand Cru 2009 Échezeaux

As a trustee of this charitable foundation dedicated to enriching the wine, spirits and hospitality industries through education, I’m proud to be associated with its first-ever event in the US, in this case co-hosted by Amayès Aouli, Bonhams' newly appointed global head of wine and spirits.

The Gérard Basset Foundation believes in a future where a career in wine, spirits and hospitality is open to all, no matter their background or circumstances. Unusually, it operates truly internationally, funding programmes that support a diverse range of communities all over the world. Gérard’s son Romané Basset, co-founding trustee of the Foundation who will also be in New York on 6 May, comments, ‘Since our founding in 2021, we have already pledged £1.8 million to support 1,200 beneficiaries globally. We are honoured to be organising our very first event in the United States as we continue to raise awareness of the scholars and grantees we fund around the world.’

World-renowned somm Pascaline Lepeltier, Meilleur Sommelier de France 2018, MOF, like me a huge fan and friend of Gérard’s, will be our head sommelier at the tasting, organised by Amayès Aouli and Marie Keep, head of wine and spirits, Americas at Bonhams. Lepeltier comments, ‘It is truly an honour to support the legacy and vision of the incredible Gérard Basset, a mentor, and a beacon for so many of us in the business. The Foundation, embodying his spirit of sharing and giving access to wine education to many, helps without a doubt to open the doors to talents who will shape tomorrow’s wine world.’

Champagne Boërl & Kroff are donating a collection of extremely rare magnums of Boërl & Kroff Vintage 1998 to be enjoyed before the sit-down tasting..
