The village of Wiltingen, home of the Scharzhofberger vineyard, stands on the remains of an old Roman settlement, and it can therefore be assumed with some certainty that the first vines at the location called Sarta were planted during the period of Roman colonisation. Sound historic proof of the Scharzhofberger as an area of vineyard exists in a document from 1314, in which Canon Ulricus of Longyon confirms his gift of ‘quattuor jurnalia terrae vineate in monte nuncupato schayrth’ to the Abbey of St Marien.
