Claar Sangiovese 2009 Columbia Valley

15.5

Certifications: LIVE, Salmon Safe. Grown within what is now (since 2021) the White Bluffs AVA. Harvested 3 October at 23.5 Brix. Primary fermentation in stainless-steel tanks using BDX yeast with pumpovers twice daily. Malolactic fermentation in oak barrels for two weeks. Matured for 18 months in a combination of new and neutral French oak barrels. pH 3.62. Bottled January 2012.
Really dusty, old book spines, sawdust, red cherry, cracked leather, iodine. Tannins are quite gentle – fine-grained sandpaper, acid is high and tart. Slightly over the hill and a bit dilute, lacking mid palate. It's not the most complex but it does make me think of Italy and I do think that was the point. I wouldn't be at all upset if this landed on my table with a pizza, I just wouldn't be thinking about the wine much. (SCJ)
