Giannitessari, Perinato Pigno Classico 2020 Soave

17

Full bottle 1,158 g. A single-vineyard Soave from the Pigno cru, planted in 1990 on volcanic soil. Spends a year in large oak barrels. 100% Garganega.
This is a very different ball game to their entry-level Soave. And it's not just the oak. Several notches up in terms of complexity and depth. Sweetly smoky on the nose, hints of roasted crushed nuts and mixed spice. It has all the classic Soave hallmarks of hay and white blossom, pears and almonds, but there's another layer under that, a descant of mandarin, rock salt, papaya and ginger root cooked in syrup. It's adagio over the top of the tongue and allegro as it pulls slowly back with ribbons of silk. The white blossom comes glistening with honey and the almonds crushed in coconut cream. The finish has great length and turns arrow-like in its intensity. Very, very good. (TC)
