Inspired by Sam’s Mission Blind Tasting series, I signed up for a tasting called ‘Burgundy or Bust’, which asked a simple question: can you identify which Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs come from Burgundy?
To which the simple answer is: no. Not for the most part, anyway. Figuring out why raises several more questions about taster fallibility, similarities between terroirs, the influence of winemaking, and ultimately – heretically – to what extent origin really matters.
