The father of modern Rioja dies

Enrique Forner, founder of Marqués de Cáceres, responsible for the wine that is considered to be the first modern Rioja with the initial vintage of 1970, died yesterday at the age of 86.

Forner’s father was a member of parliament during the Second Republic and had to emigrate to France during the Spanish Civil War. There they started trading in wine, until they acquired a couple of châteaux in Bordeaux: the cru classé Château de Camensac and Château Larose-Trintaudon, a cru bourgeois supérieur.
