The best time to visit an English vineyard is in the autumn. The leaves are turning brown, the harvest should be over (though can stretch to early November) and the wines are quietly bubbling away. While the mornings are cold and misty, traces of summer warmth linger on well into October. There’s an air of calm and at the more popular producers you will have missed the summer-holiday crowds.
