DOMAINE MICHELOT, Meursault
Stewed apple, clove and cinnamon, and a chalky texture giving flesh to the persistence. A few flashes of flint and slate give this a typical 'mineral' style. (RH)
Bright, snappy apple fruit on the nose, with plenty of concentration on the palate, but restrained weight and a savoury, refreshing finish. Enjoyable salinity on the aftertaste. (RH)
DOMAINE FRANÇOIS MIKULSKI, Meursault
Tank sample. Creamy melon fruit. Soft but fresh. A slightly sour flavour but a serviceable white and pretty good length. (JH)
So little wine that he bottled it all in magnums. Tank sample.
Tight and bright but not simple. Dry, stony finish. Lots of citrus fruit at the core. Mouth-watering and good length. (JH)
DOMAINE MILLET, Chablis
Dusty citrus nose. Dry, bright and correct, with a slight sweet taste on the finish (though it is dry). (JH)
DOMAINE JEAN-MARC MILLOT, Nuits-St-Georges
Cask sample. Mid crimson. Scented dark-red fruit and a hint of oak sweetness. Chewy and yet rounded, with satisfyingly complete core of fruit. A light sour freshness on the finish. (JH)
Cask sample. Pretty red-fruited aroma, pure and lively but not simple. Is there a proportion of stems in here – seems to be that edge of stemmy freshness. Gorgeous on the palate, supple, scented and charming but with length and fruit depth. GV (JH)
Cask sample. Mid crimson. A definite oak note at the moment slightly obscuring the fruit aroma. On the palate, firm, fine-grained but smooth and seductively textured, with a long (currently oaky) finish. (JH)
Cask sample. Mid cherry red. Aromas of woody spice and dark-red fruit. Dry and already surprisingly smooth tannins. Dry and just a little bitterness on the finish to indicate it needs more time. Plenty of fruit in the middle and a long finish. (JH)
Cask sample. Mid crimson. Gorgeous red-fruited aroma, lifted and scented. The fruit soaring beyond any oak aroma. More savoury on the palate, more oak spice. The tannins already gentle even if not yet ready for drinking. Long, juicy finish. (JH)
DOMAINE ANDRÉ MOINGEON, St-Aubin
Pale green/gold. Smoky, oaky nose at first that mellows. Some reductive/struck-match notes. Big palate – the oak is significant and quite raw but still in balance. Needs time. GV (EL)
Really lovely nose – creamy, oaty, ethereal and elegant. Balanced and long. Less intensity than the St Aubin Les Champlots just tasted. Could drink this now but will benefit from a few years. (EL)
DOMAINE DES MOIROTS, Bissey-sous-Cruchaud
Bottled. Smoky citrus with creamy and ripe lemon on the palate. Gentle, flavourful and easy pleasure, almost honeyed on the finish. (JH)
Aged in oak, about 30% new. Bottled.
Light to mid cherry. Peppery, lightly and attractively dusty fresh fruit. Riper, richer and more dense than I expected on the palate. Straightforward pleasure and VGV. (JH)
Aged in oak, about 70% new. Bottled.
Much darker than the Givry village wine. Darker-fruited on the nose too. Not a lot more intense than the village wine though definitely a little firmer and longer. Just fresh enough. Needs time. GV (JH)
DOMAINE MONGEARD-MUGNERET, Vosne-Romanée
RH: Characterful and occasionally esoteric styles here.
Simple, light, functional Pinot. Has the lightness and paleness of the variety, if none of the drama and complexity. (RH)
Strongly aromatic nose with spice and red fruit leaping forth – but also a glue aroma (possible acetic influence?). Firm, grainy tannins and bright acidic finish. (RH)
Vegetal, stemmy nose – stylised and distinctive. Redcurrant and raspberry with a slightly candied edge, then a rather flat palate which doesn't sustain interest. (RH)
DOMAINE DE MONTILLE, MAISON DE MONTILLE and CHÂTEAU DE PULIGNY-MONTRACHET, Puligny-Montrachet
JR: Étienne de Montille says he is thrilled by what they may learn in their adventures in southern California and Hokkaido, Japan. 2017 was the first vintage for him and winemaker Brian Sieve in California. The wide range offers very solid, well-made...
