Visitors to this site showed huge and somewhat unexpected talent as comic writers in this week’s
caption competition designed to come up with the best explanation of what Roger Jones of The Harrow is doing in the scene below.
Nick, our 16 year-old daughter and I pored over the scores of suggested captions last night and I was impressed by how often the two of them chuckled spontaneously – quite a feat in the case of a teenager not at all interested in wine for the moment. (She did ask “what’s brett?” but needed no help with Laurence Bernes’ inspired Riedel bedpan.)
There were so many good lines that it proved absolutely impossible to choose just one recipient of our Jancis Robinson’s Wine Course and Vintners’ Tales DVDs and after much deliberation, I have chosen four extremely worth recipients:
Tim Hall of London for the sheer number of good quality submissions of which our favourite was:
“After GCSEs [standard UK exams for school leavers] and a short job as a lion tamer, Roger began to ponder a career path in wine…”
Christophe Smith of Napa Valley for
“It didn’t really hurt until Roger saw he wasn’t mentioned in the foreword.”
(Christophe, I am sending your DVDs to the PO Box given on the Titus Vineyards website – ok?)
Jonathan Cottrell of London for the delightfully simple
“It’s not easy looking innocent when you’ve nicked that many pillows.”
Michael Alberty of Oregon for a joke that had to be patiently explained to me by my family since I was clearly the butt of this particular one:
“I’m glad I only suggested revisions on Chapter Four.”
DVDs are on their way to all of the above but I shall leave it to the patient subject of all this, Roger Jones, to decide who deserves his (remarkably and coincidentally topical) bottles of Moss Wood. Do let us know whom you choose, Roger.
Later that same day... Roger chooses Jonathan Pillowman Cottrell. as lucky recipient of his bottles of Moss Wood (currently discussed here on the members' forum). Many congratulations to all of you for such ingenuity and thanks for making so many of us laugh.
