Masi, Fresco di Masi 2020 IGT Verona
Full bottle 1,186 g. Certified vegan and Ecocert organic. Grapes are pressed immediately, spontaneously fermented and bottled unfiltered. Lightweight glass bottle, recycled paper labels and plastic-free. This wine, they believe, represents the future and this is their message: they are deeply traditional but able to produce contemporary wines for younger consumers, and they really do care about the environment. All their wines, says 7th generation Giacomo Boscaini, are produced with 'the sustainability mentality'. This is a single-vineyard wine produced from a specific spot just outside Valpolicella Classico – Rivoli: 10 minutes from the winery, between Lake Garda and beginning of Alto Adige, in a very, very windy channel, which makes it perfect for organic production. 70% Corvina and 30% Merlot. Corvina, he tells me, is very fine and light when it’s not dried. 30% Merlot for more power and body. The wines goes from vineyard to bottle in three months.
I tasted this in November 2021 and loved it. It's still fabulous. I wish it was exported to the US because it would make a fabulous wine of the week. Zippy, bursting with fruit and energy, ultra-fresh. Cherries, raspberries and cinnamon. A joy-filled, exuberant wine that I would stick in the fridge and drink every summer evening if I could. GV (TC)
