Paolo Berta, 1842 Valbeccara Superiore 2018 Barbera d'Asti

17

Full bottle 1,295 g. Six months in oak barrique and then six months in acacia.
The fruit on this is a little wild; sweet-dried-fruit-dark, as if it has ripened in very warm sun, but with an earthiness and roast-chestnut richness that adds layers of tonality and moodiness to the wine. The tannins have more tug and stubble rasp than their Evolution and Belmon 2019 Barbera d'Astis, but they're not drying, and the wine has a long channel of ripe acidity drawing tang and dried-orange-peel fragrance through the fruit. A whisper of Christmas spice. Maybe it's because it's a cold, rainy spring day, but I taste this and can't help thinking of a Moroccan lamb and apricot tagine... (TC)
