When we held Barolo Nights in New York last year and the year before (pictured here), we had complaints from people who said they missed out on tickets because we didn't publicise the events enough.

This is an attempt to answer that criticism. On the evening of Wednesday 24 October our Italian specialist Walter Speller and I are very much looking forward to co-hosting with Chambers Street Wines, winner of our 2014  best independent wine store competition, a tasting of at least 45 great, high-scoring Chianti Classicos hand-picked by Walter. The selection will include many Gran Selezione and Riserva wines, arranged by commune and designed to demonstrate just how fine these wines can be nowadays – partly thanks to producers' newfound enthusiasm for Sangiovese, the great grape of Tuscany. See Walter's enthusiastic article Chianti Classico 2016 and 2015 Riservas, for example, in which he points out that this is a category that has really hit its stride recently.

This event will be very similar to our  London Chianti Classico Night to be held this Sunday 23 September – a sell-out long ago. There will be the same detailed tasting booklet  and the ability to serve yourself, in this case in the spacious room above Tribeca Grill, with no shortage of delicious food on the side.

But the New York version will be even better value than the London one because, included in every ticket is a year's membership of JancisRobinson.com (£85 or, at today's rates, about $110) and your very own example of my brand new  gossamer-thin wine glass (worth $56) to use on the night and take home in a presentation box. So, as you can see, those who buy tickets will be practically tasting for free!
