Burgundy 2015 – G

Saturday 7 January 2017
Image

See this guide to our extensive coverage of Burgundy 2015. Our picture is of Thierry Glantenay in his brand new cellar extension dug out of the hillside above the village of Volnay.

Now that the wines have been sorted into groups by producer, you can sort the wines within those groups by score or appellation.

DOMAINE JEAN-NOËL GAGNARD

White

Intense, almost cheesy, nose – perhaps the lees character. Then pure-fruited and oaky on the palate. A very nice slight grip in the texture and marked intensity. The palate far better than the nose suggested. (JH)

Drink: 2018 – 2025
Price: £400 per case of 12 ib Justerini & Brooks
White

Again that leesy note initially, then a marked cedar/oak aroma. Intense in both fruit and oak flavours. Concentrated and needing time to settle but has terrific focus and length. (JH)

Drink: 2020 – 2030
Price: £600 per case of 12 ib Justerini & Brooks
White

Much more stony on the nose than Les Petits Clos but still with the piercing intensity of green fruits and cedary oak. Firm, dry and grippy. Perhaps a little more austere than Les Petits Clos but great length. (JH)

Drink: 2020 – 2032
Price: £750 per case of 12 ib Justerini & Brooks
Red

Light cherry red. Notably stemmy in its fresh fruit aroma. Almost vegetal. Light, zesty, a little insubstantial but balanced overall. A slight bitterness on the finish because of that green note. (JH)

Drink: 2017 – 2020
Price: £335 per case of 12 ib Justerini & Brooks

DOMAINE GAGNARD-DELAGRANGE

White

Cask sample. Cool, limey citrus. Shapely, rounded and full of fruit flavour. Deep and long and still finishes with bright freshness. (JH)

Drink: 2018 – 2024
Price: £300 per case of 12 ib Clarion Wines
White

Cask sample. This is seductive in its lemon and cream fullness on the nose, just lightly spiced. But it is almost too crisp on the palate – I’d want this with food. Only just in balance, even for acid freaks. But perhaps with another couple of years in bottle … (JH)

Drink: 2019 – 2025
Price: £399 per case of 12 ib Clarion Wines
Red

Cask sample. Deliciously fragrant with delicate red fruits and a hint of tea leaf. Delicate, super-fine texture. Very pretty, and persistent in its lightness and with a finely fresh finish. (JH)

Drink: 2018 – 2025
Price: £272 per case of 12 ib Clarion Wines

DOMAINE FLORENT GARAUDET
Two very attractive, good-value reds in a lighter, aromatic style. (JH)

Red

Light cherry red. Ripe, seductive red-cherry aroma. Almost like cherry liqueur in the impression of sweetness. On the palate, juicy, red fruited and finely zesty. Light tannins are just right for the fruit weight. Lots of straightforward pleasure. GV (JH)

Drink: 2018 – 2024
Price: £280 per case of 12 ib The Burgundy Portfolio
Red

Light cherry red. Rich, ripe and full-fruited on the nose. More intense and less flirtatious than the straight Monthelie. Richer on the palate too but still with finesse in the acid/tannin framework. Finishes light and fragrant. (JH)

Drink: 2019 – 2025
Price: £340 per case of 12 ib The Burgundy Portfolio

DOMAINE GEANTET-PANSIOT including GEANTET-PANSIOT

Red

Mid crimson. Edgy, lively, bitter cherry zestiness to the nose. Relatively lightweight but nicely transparent. Proper Morey. GV (JR)

Drink: 2022 – 2030
Price: £150 per case of 6 ib Howard Ripley
Red

Heady and nicely balanced with lots of ripe fruit and a kick of bitterness. Good stuff! (JR)

Drink: 2020 – 2030
Price: £170 per case of 6 ib Goedhuis & Co
Red

Mid crimson. Slightly sweaty nose and quite demanding palate at the moment. For the future! (JR)

Drink: 2023 – 2035
Price: £245 per case of 6 ib Goedhuis & Co
Red

Mid to dark crimson. Very intense and chewy. Quite backward. (JR)

Drink: 2025 – 2037
Price: £280 per case of 6 ib Goedhuis & Co
Red

Solid, dense and surprisingly fragrant. Polished and sweet and round. Really rather seductive. (JR)

Drink: 2024 – 2038
Price: £395 per case of 6 ib Goedhuis & Co
Red

Spicy nose and lighter than the Poissenot. Just a bit dull. (JR)

Drink: 2025 – 2036
Price: £395 per case of 6 ib Goedhuis & Co
Red

Bright crimson. Solid and strong with cherry stone flavours. Lots of bright appeal. (JR)

Drink: 2025 – 2040
Price: £395 per case of 6 ib Goedhuis & Co
Red

Solid and sweet. Chewy and firm. (JR)

Drink: 2029 – 2048
Price: £650 per case of 6 ib Goedhuis & Co

DOMAINE HENRI GERMAIN

White

Cask sample. Ornate reductive nose with loads of matchstick and flint character. Weirdly enough, this style is starting to seem a little old-fashioned! Smoky bacon and apple on the nose. Very well done. (RH)

Drink: 2018 – 2025
Price: £420 per case of 12 ib Lea & Sandeman
White

Cask sample. Butter, salt, lime fruit – much less of the stylised reductive aromas of their Chevalières. Great purity, and there's a definite mineral tang on the finish. (RH)

Drink: 2017 – 2023
Price: £560 per case of 12 ib Lea & Sandeman

DOMAINE JEAN-JACQUES GIRARD

White
Butter, lemon, apple and spice. The palate seems more limited than the nose, and the finish is fairly brief. (RH)
Drink: 2017 – 2019
Price: £185 per case of 12 ib Montrachet Fine Wine Merchants
White

Lemon, salt, zingy acid giving a tart finish. Could use a bit more stuffing. (RH)

Drink: 2017 – 2020
Price: £235 per case of 12 ib Montrachet Fine Wine Merchants
White

Dry, full-bodied, baked apple fruit with a long and concentrated finish. Not much complexity – no oak spice, no reductive or nutty character – and perhaps not quite enough acidic spine to last for the long haul. (RH)

Drink: 2018 – 2025
Price: £1025 per case of 12 ib Montrachet Fine Wine Merchants
Red
Light, sweet red fruit – simple and fresh, with good ripeness. The subtle oak fits into the flavour profile nicely. Good acidic kick on the finish, and fully softened tannin. (RH)
Drink: 2016 – 2020
Price: £130 per case of 12 ib Montrachet Fine Wine Merchants
Red

Attractive green herbal notes with a slightly sweaty edge. More savoury and more tannic than their Bourgogne, just as it should be – in fact, this has quite serious chunkiness. (RH)

Drink: 2018 – 2025
Price: £175 per case of 12 ib Montrachet Fine Wine Merchants
Red

Richer and more confected red fruit than their Savigny, but not at all overripe. Light tannins, plenty of concentration and lovely violet fragrance perking up the finish. (RH)

Drink: 2017 – 2025
Price: £235 per case of 12 ib Montrachet Fine Wine Merchants
Red

Crunchy redcurrant and stemmy herbal note. Lovely tame tannic paste that gives shape without being intrusive. Good length too. Lovely combination of subtlety and promise. (RH)

Drink: 2018 – 2028
Price: £270 per case of 12 ib Montrachet Fine Wine Merchants
Red

Rose petal and sweet cedar spice on the nose. Very aromatic palate – lovely floral perfume and complementary sweet spice. Relatively firm tannins, which are digestible now but will age well. (RH)

Drink: 2018 – 2028
Price: £270 per case of 12 ib Montrachet Fine Wine Merchants
Red

Generous red fruit on the nose. Sweet oak influence too – not too obvious, but certainly prominent. Tame tannin, drinkable now and probably not intended for the long term. Finishes with a bitter juniper note. (RH)

Drink: 2017 – 2025
Price: £270 per case of 12 ib Montrachet Fine Wine Merchants

JUSTIN GIRARDIN

White

Super-creamy aroma. Cool, fresh and elegant rather than intense. Straightforward, with great persistence but well balanced between fruit and freshness. (JH)

Drink: 2017 – 2019
Price: £115 per case of 12 ib H2Vin
Red

Light crimson. Lively, dark-red fruit. Super-juicy and deliciously approachable (H2Vin have been selling this for a few months). Supple and silky in a fresh light style. GV (JH)

Drink: 2017 – 2019
Price: £115 per case of 12 ib H2Vin
Red

Cask sample. Light crimson. Smells a little richer than the Santenay Vieilles Vignes. But on the palate it is slightly more austere in structure for now. More intense but less supple at the moment. Tight, dry finish. (JH)

Drink: 2018 – 2022
Price: £165 per case of 12 ib H2Vin
Red

Cask sample. Light crimson. Lovely inviting red fruits and cream on the nose, livened up by a touch of spice. Juicy, fine-boned and deliciously fresh. Gentle tannins mean you could drink this now with food. (JH)

Drink: 2017 – 2021
Price: £165 per case of 12 ib H2Vin
Red

Cask sample. Light to mid crimson. Riper and more expressive than the Clos Rousseau. Lifted, fragrant, full of spiced fruit and vitality. Well balanced, easy-going. (JH)

Drink: 2017 – 2022
Price: £169 per case of 12 ib H2Vin
