La Rioja Alta is one of the most respected Rioja producers and one of my favourites, ever since their wines did so well in the very first comparative tasting I ever arranged, back in the early 1980s when I had just been taken on by The Sunday Times as their wine correspondent. You may not believe it, but tastings like this were a complete novelty then. Anthony Hanson MW, who lived near me at that point, tasted with me. The late consumer journalist and my editor Michael Bateman loved it.
