The Maxime Herkunft Rheinhessen (MHR) association was founded in February 2017 by leading estates of Rheinhessen who were not members of the VDP but who thought it would be a good idea to adopt the VDP Rheinhessen classification with its three tiers of Gutswein (estate wine), Ortswein (wines with a communal appellation) and Lagenwein (single-vineyard wines; the VDP Federal classification, shown in the image, is further divided into Erste Lagen and Grosse Lagen).
