German 2020 releases – Pfalz and Rheinhessen

Niersteiner Pettenthal October 2019 KPK

See this guide to our growing coverage of the exceptional 2019 vintage in Germany and see also Julia's article on 2020 releases from KP Keller and family in the Rheinhessen. Klaus Peter took this photo looking over their vines in Niersteiner Pettenthal down to the Rhine in early October 2019.

The following 161 wines are grouped by region, Pfalz then Rheinhessen, and are then shown in alphabetical order by producer (sur)name, but you can change the order within the groups using the self-sort menu below.

Orange delight would be a far too simplified description of this Grosse Lage Spätlese. It does have zesty citrus-peel appeal, but also ripe pear and apricot aromas, and a very fine spicy notion. On the palate passion fruit adds another dimension to the plethora of fruit, presented on a silky texture. Generous in flavour with a rich mouthfeel, but low in alcohol, what more could you ask for. The Auxerrois from a clay and marl provenance is not shy in expressing a fruity fragrance of ripe pear and apricot. Bernhart, Schweigener Kalkmergel Grauburgunder trocken 2019 Pfalz

A pale pink-gin hue indicates a short maceration on the Pinot Gris skins. The ripe fruit of apricot is supported by just a hint of vanilla on the nose, but on the palate the latter takes a more dominant role and adds quite a sweet touch to the fleshy fruit. Despite the contribution of oak, the Kalkmergel remains quite soft and supple, a fresh citrusy finish bringing some contours to the full body. (MS)

Bernhart, Schweigener Tonmergel S Chardonnay trocken 2019 Pfalz

At first honeycomb and quince fascinate the olfactory perception, but with more airing a Meursault-esque nuttiness begins to establish its credentials. The palate reveals a burgundian approach to the use of oak with very little vanilla and far more nutty and spicy notions, supported by a marked toasted accent as well as nuances of apricot peel and kernel. This will take a bit of time to come together but has potential written all over it. (MS)

Münzberg - Lothar Kessler & Söhne, Godramsteiner Kalkgestein Weissburgunder trocken 2019 Pfalz

Vanilla is the main fragrance of this Ortswein (village) Pinot Blanc, suggesting a little time spent in oak, maybe fermentation in barrique. This hunch is consolidated on the palate, where it’s not quite as sweet as apricots with vanilla custard, but shows quite a bit of residual sugar to seduce the taste buds. The rich texture makes you realise that the fruit was certainly ripe in 2018, as does the residual sugar. The bright golden colour instantly catches the eye. Dr Wehrheim, Birkweiler Rotliegendes Riesling trocken 2019 Pfalz

The ripe yellow fruit of the Riesling from Rotliegendes is expertly complemented by a sweet spicy notion. On the palate this is an embodiment of Riesling from the southern Palatinate, full bodied and with generous juice that almost makes you forget that this is also a dry wine. The sweet spice pops up again on the finish, and I find it impossible to decide whether is comes from terroir or oak. (MS)

Is it too much to ask to imagine the smell of a wet meadow after a recent rain shower? There’s yellow and stone fruit too, but not really trying to dominate the fragrance. On the palate the harmony between rich texture, ample body and ripe complex fruit composition is truly impressive, the finish very long, with rounded acidity perfectly integrated. Add the most subtle touch of exotic spice to the finish and you have an Erste Lage worthy of Grosses Gewächs status. (MS)

Plum may be the fruit on the nose, but it’s the smoky and mineral notes which really catch the olfactory attention. The 1763 is a wine that is left to make its own decision on when to stop fermenting. This way it usually ends up above the trocken limit; other growers would probably use the feinherb designation. Tastefully tropical describes the fragrance of the Old Vines (Alte Reben) Westhofener Riesling in a nutshell. Although assigned to the Ortswein (village wine) category, it uses a new clause in the VDP classification of Rheinhessen to state that all the grapes came from Erste Lagen. If it didn’t say so on the label, you would easily be able to tell just by the concentration of flavour. It has it all, from sweet apple to apricot, mandarin and passion fruit, expressed in a wonderfully juicy quality. Fritz Groebe is never one to take trocken to the zero limit, but here the gentle dosage of sweetness has no doubt more to do with the ripeness of fruit than plain residual sugar. (MS)

Wagner-Stempel, Siefersheimer Heerkretz Riesling Spätlese 2019 Rheinhessen

Although the fruit is ripe and quite exotic on the nose, it teases rather than overwhelms the olfactory perception. On the palate the perfect combination of local and tropical fruit matches juicy peach with mouth-watering orange, accentuated by a fascinating herbal nuance vaguely reminiscent of lavender. Rich enough not to be called racy, but nevertheless truly invigorating. (MS)

Winter, Riesling trocken 2019 Rheinhessen

Floral, fruity and herbal aromas come together in a delightfully open fragrance. Stefan Winter has successfully managed to transpose this composition onto the palate, although the herbal constituent takes precedence. Animating acidity keeps things lively on the finish. Not just another estate wine. (MS)

Winter, Dittelsheimer Riesling trocken 2018 Rheinhessen

Although only afforded Ortswein (village wine) status, all grapes for the Dittelsheim hail from Erste Lagen, and it already shows in a rich fragrance of ripe stone fruit with a hint of something more exotic. The latter turns out to take the taste of mango and lime on the palate, supporting the local fruit of apricot and melon. But it would be too simple to describe the wine as merely fruity, not doing justice to subtle nutty and spicy notions. (MS)

Winter, Dittelsheimer Chardonnay trocken 2018 Rheinhessen

Roasted and smoky aromas reflect some time spent in wood, but there is enough room for an intriguing herbal fragrance to peer through the oak curtain. On the palate we have a very idiosyncratic composition, in which the toasted constituent slightly overshadows notes of stone fruit and possibly even pineapple, dried herbs also making a cameo appearance. This will take time to come together, but cannot be faulted on potential. (MS)

Winter, Dittelsheimer Geiersberg Riesling Grosses Gewächs 2018 Rheinhessen

Although the fragrance clearly reflects the ripeness of fruit in 2018, it’s not trying to overwhelm with perfumed opulence but rather with a tasteful composition of apricot, mango and orange. On the palate the fruit is embedded in a rich texture, and even if, due to the vintage, acidity has lost a little bit of its edge, its balancing role has been successfully usurped by a marked stony minerality. A nutty finish provides the final accent. (MS)

Winter, Dittelsheimer Leckerberg Riesling Grosses Gewächs 2018 Rheinhessen

The Leckerberg is probably the least ostentatious of Winter’s Grosse Gewächse, sweet apple, peach and apricot providing fleshy fruit without the need for tropical assistance. A supple texture enhances the ripe and quite sweet expression of fruit without slipping into blandness. (MS)

Winter, Dittelsheimer Kloppberg Riesling Grosses Gewächs 2018 Rheinhessen

A delightful composition of mandarin, maracuja and peach caresses rather than overwhelms the nose. On the palate the juices flow, but the sweet ripe fruit is well balanced by some piquant peel notes and a subtle nutty, kernel finish. The texture is supple, the body ample, the acidity well integrated but with enough presence to keep a harmonious balance. (MS)
