Every year the VDP association of elite German wine producers shows off the latest vintage in Mainz at the massive Weinbörse event. This year there were hundreds, if not thousands, of 2018 whites and 2017 reds on taste – not least because German producers tend to make a wide range of wines, not necessarily in vast quantities. (Hence the relative difficulty of assembling sufficient bottles of older vintages for our Riesling Night 2 earlier this year.)
