Our popular annual Barolo Night is returning to London on Sunday 20 November 2016 and tickets are now available to non-members, and members who missed the earlybird rate. See this report on last year's Barolo Night.
Once again, we will be taking over the excellent Caravan restaurant just north of King's Cross station to bring together a small group of wine lovers and, this year, a selection of some of the finest Barolo 2012s. While this vintage presented some challenging weather conditions (read Walter's report for a full description), some very fine and potentially long-lasting wines have been crafted by those producers who worked meticulously in the vineyard throughout the growing cycle.
Although we received more advance ticket requests than ever, we have held the ticket price at £105, and this year tickets include a signed copy of The 24-Hour Wine Expert for Barolo fans to give to their less knowledgeable friends or family. As in previous years, we will be donating any surplus funds from the event to a charity of our choice. This year, proceeds will go to victims of the recent central Italian earthquake. It may have disappeared from the headlines but its legacy is truly devastating.
Attendees will be treated to a choice of sparkling Piemontese aperitivi, a free-pour tasting of 40 to 50 Baroli from some of the very best producers hand-picked by Walter, plus, during the second half of the event, an extensive selection of finger foods and pizzas prepared by Caravan's talented kitchen team. As usual, we will be tasting from Riedel burgundy glasses hired from Sensible Wine Services.
Exact wines are still being confirmed, but see last year's participants. As usual, Walter and Jancis will introduce the event, and will be on hand, along with other members of our team, for the rest of the evening.
This London event, now in its fourth year, has been so successful that it has spawned an American counterpart. On Monday 24 October Jamie Wolff of Chambers Street Wines, winner of our best independent wine merchant title, will be co-hosting a similar event in New York with Jancis and Walter. Tickets went on sale last Friday and it was an immediate sell-out – a sign perhaps of how much more familiar New York wine lovers are with Piemonte's greatest wine. Our aim in starting this annual tradition was to establish Barolo as firmly in Britain's fine-wine firmament.
