2020 Rhône – Châteauneuf and Vacqueyras whites

Bunches of Roussanne, Clairette and Bourboulenc © Christophe Grilhé

Just three of the distinctive white varieties used in the wines reviewed below (left to right): Roussanne, Clairette and Bourboulenc. See this guide to our coverage of 2020 Rhône.

Some lovely white Châteauneufs have been made in 2020 with freshness and fruit to the fore. Expressions differ with the varying blends, the only issue being the élevage and successful integration of oak.

The 81 tasting notes below are grouped by appellation then listed in alphabetical order of producer (sur)name – but you can change this.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape

34% Grenache Blanc, 34% Roussanne, 32% Clairette. Aged 10 months in new oak.
Creamy oak and round, juicy fruit add a tropical aspect to the wine. In its way quite well done but the palate is heavy and dry on the finish. Refreshment not guaranteed. (JL)
